Spent for than a hour watching this tricolor trying for a fish, missing and returning to his lookout spot the try again. He must have made 15 flights and dives and never got a thing. I, however, managed a few photos. The first is my favorite but somehow I like the bank and turn on the second shot.
Nikon D300s, tripod, 200-400mm lens ISO 500, F6.3 (chosen to get more DOF on those big wings) in aperture mode shutter is over 1/1500 on both shots.
Thanks for looking.

The dense green (algae?)makes for a nice backdrop to these action shots. I like the poses.
I wonder how the herons manage to fish amongst it?

Thank you Erv. I do like the detail shown in the downloads. The first is currently my computer background.

Thanks for looking. The green is not algae it is a plant called duckweed what is just millions of tiny leaves that float on the water. Watching the bird, he seemed to be hearing the fish as he would cock his head, pause and then strike through the weeds. He did come of empty most of the time, so maybe he can't hear or see very well. There were some open places nearby, but he never went near those areas. There was also a alligator about 15 feet away who seemed to pay no attention to the bird.
Hearing fish! That's some ear!
Duckweed is considered a pest weed here. Would have made another interesting image if the alligator took an interest in either the heron or you.

I have a deal with the gators. They leave me alone, I take their photos and make them popular and famous.
So far, so good. . .
Love the grace of that bird shown in your photos,1st one most.
