My current camera body is a Eos Rebel T3 and I wanted to invest some hard earned money for the "EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM" Canon lens. I looked on a website "http://lenshero.com" to see if the lens was able to function correctly on my camera since it is a crop frame sensor & the lens is built for full frame sensors. The website said that it was compatible with the Rebel T3 but I don't know if the website is reliable. I have had some photographers tell me that I would get like a black shadow around the edge of my photographs because it was a crop frame sensor. I don't want to have to upgrade my camera body just to use the lens. Please help. Thanks.

Im no expert, but I was always told it was the other way around; you will get vignetting (that black shadow) if you use a lens meant for crop frame on a full size sensor camera. I have used full size lenses on my a37 without problems. I bet the next person to post here will know for sure. Oh look, here comes one now! :-)

You can use EF lenses on a crop frame camera. EFS LENSES will not work on full frame camera. I ave a 40D & use the ED24-105L & it's wonderful. My next lens is tge lens you are interested in..

Thanks. I just want to make sure the lens will work with the camera before I bought it. I plan on buying the 5D Mark II camera body after this purchase.

Hi James F.: I'm reasonably certain as long as your Canon Rebel T3 will take an EF lens (red dot as opposed to the white square if it has both it will take both EF and EF-S) you will have no problems of any kind. Here is a website that covers just about every Canon lens out there as to quality and usage, it also covers lens compatibility. http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html. Under the UHH FAQ Sensor Sizes Chart Nikonian72 has posted an excellent example of the difference between a full frame 35mm and various cropped sensor cameras, it has not only an easy to understand coverage chart but also a photo showing what you actually see and take with both the full frame vs cropped frame cameras. Note the image sizes are exactly the same with both sensors, the difference is how much more area around the subject is included with a full frame sensor. At the very top of the forum page, you see Ugly Hedgehog - Photography Forum Just below that there is a list of tabs the third one is search, click on that and type in FAQ: Sensor Sizes Chart hit enter the information and the chart should come right up. You might also use the help tab, last in the first row of tabs. to gain the same FAQ information. Hope this helps.

The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM will work just fine on your T3.

I have that lens and:

- it will work on your camera (and any other EOS body)
- you will be delighted with it

It will work great now...and it will be devastating on a mark II body.

The lens is perfectly compatible with your body. You can use ANY EF or EF-S lens on your body. You cannot use EF-S on full frame or 1.3 crop sensor canon bodies (earlier 1Ds) however

HI James, I don't if this will help. I shoot with a T3i and I saved a ton of money buying the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG lens. It has been rated very high along side of Canon 70-200. It just depends on where you go to read about it. This lens is super sharp, Quick, quiet, and easy to operate too. It just depends on you wallet, I saved or $1,000.00 through Amazon.com. I talked to Sigma. I still get the 4 yr warranty on the lens. I am very happy with mine. Good Luck.

I began using this lens with a Canon 20D, then a 30D,(both crop sensors) and am currently using it on my 5DII. Works great on all.

I have owned both the 70-200 f/2.8 and the f/4 version of this lens. I now only own the f/4 version. Before I make my point, I just want to say that both lenses are superb! You can't go wrong with either one.

Okay, now there is one little detail (okay a few). As you now know, the f/2.8 will cost you a lot more than the f/4. If you are mainly taking shots indoors, then having the extra stop is great, but if you are like me, it won't pay for itself. If you eventually upgrade your camera to a 5D MII, then perhaps the additional low light performance will blur the line between these two lenses even more?

I guess my point is to review the optical performance of both the f/2.8 and f/4 versions before you open your wallet. Of course, like I said, it will ultimately depend on how you plan to use this lens. Good luck---awesome lens... worth the price? Hmmm... based on a very few alternatives, not sure.
