Lym,

I'm sure you've received many good places to get the education on cameras that you are seeking. Here is another one. It is VERY thorough and easy to understand.

Welcome aboard Lym. All the info is in those manuals but some times they are hard to understand. There are a lot of books out there that explain things in a more understandable way. You can get most of your questions ansered right here on the Hog.

Hi

So, does anyone know of any website in which not only camera nomenclature is explained but also the effect of using the various ways/modes of taking a picture manually - so that I can become a "real" photographer?

Have a look at www.Youtube.com there are thousands of video tutorials to help you through from beginner to expert.

Welcome! I, too, finally took the plunge & bought a Canon DSLR about 6 months ago. UH is one of the best photography blogs I've seen. My best advice is to keep reading blogs such as Ugly Hedgehog (yes, some hedgehogs are cute) and just play with your camera, take notes &, most importantly, have fun! The beauty about digital is that you can delete the shot if you don't like it. Enjoy!!

Lym,
First off, Until you get enough knowledge, turn your camera on The (Green A) setting and let the camera set ALL of the settings for you including the focus. Once you have exposed yourself to enough knowledge to know Who,What,When, then you can begin to move the Selection Knob to Manuel, and return to The A green button to see how you did with your selections in Manuel. In the mean time study study study,,,,then shoot shoot shoot,,,enjoy enjoy enjoy enjoy!!!!!! Good luck on your adventure

Lym,
In my opinion, anyone that wants to learn more about DSLR Photography will find the educational/instructive videos made by Mike Browne to be fantastic. He has a talent for teaching that is truely impressive, and it's all available on youtube - hundreds of videos. You can just do a web search on the name Mike Browne or you can go here to start....

Hi

I used to be a point and shoot "photographer", having used a Canon Powershot G4 for several years and then a Canon Powershot G10, again for several years.

Because I dropped the G10 into a swimming pool when I was on holiday (vacation) as unbeknown to me, the screws holding the anchor for the strap somehow got loose and fell out (at the wrong time), causing the camera strap to slip through my hand into the water, I had no choice but to buy a new camera.

I threw caution to the winds, as I am not really a "photographer", and bought a Canon EOS 60D with a Canon 18-200mm lens kit.

Since it will be a big waste to use this camera on auto mode to point and shoot, I am hoping to learn how to use it to maximum benefit.

One way of doing it to read and sift through all past Ugly Hedgehog [are there handsome/beautiful hedgehogs? ;-)] postings to find what I can learn from them. However, this may take a long time before I can really learn about how to use the camera.

So, does anyone know of any website in which not only camera nomenclature is explained but also the effect of using the various ways/modes of taking a picture manually - so that I can become a "real" photographer?

Thanks for any advice.

Lym from KL : Welcome to UHH. You have many good responses; here is another possibility : a 2013 newly released Spring 2013 8 1/2 X 11 inch 162 page soft cover book entitled "The Ultimate Beginner's
Guide to Digital Photography -- Professional techniques for taking
better photographs", published in England and Australia (and elsewhere) by Black Dog Media (BDM) volume 6 - ISSN - 2047-2250,
0 74470 89035 5. It is well put together and covers everything as you switch to digital. Very detailed, informative, and loaded with pictoral
examples on every page. $17.99 in Australia and $19.95 in the UK, Canada, and U.S. An excellent digital summary starting point. I began serious photography in 1952, and found it helpful to put digital into logical context to my past experience shooting film in 30 countries with
Leicas, Rollieflex, Contax, Linhof, Nikon, and, finally, with Canon, and a plethora of fine lenses. Hope you can find it; am sure you will enjoy and profit from it !

Thanks raysass. I am reading the manual (page by page in sequence) that came with the camera, but I will now jump to those topics you have kindly suggested.

Many of us suggest, Brian Petersons "understanding exposure" (plus he has others that are excellent). It is a fast read (30 minutes or so), plus he gives exact settings for certain types of pictures. It is wonderfully written and extremely easy to understand.
