Is there some reasonably priced plug-in or stand-alone program that will let me easily "select" items in photos so I can change backgrounds, etc? I use PS Elements 6.

Check out Topaz Labs' plugin named Remask.

There are several tutorials and webinars available on line and you can download a free trial copy which comes with the "instruction manual".
I use it all the time.
However, I'm not sure of compatibility with all older versions of PSE.

If your PSE is older than Elements 7 upgrade to at least that(7). I have most of Topaz plug-ins,but I also have Elements 9. I do not have remask, but I understand it is a great plug-in.
