In the county I worked in for years, in the Old Jail, In the booking area, on the ceiling, was the trap door they used for hanging people in the 1800s. Used to love to take prisoners in there and point it out to them...especially unruly ones.

I didn't move here till 1969...so I had to Google Birger and read the story...Interesting. The trap door in the Jail I was referring to, was in St. Charles County. I seem to remember now that there was a trap door in Police Headquarters in St Louis as well....I spent 10 years as a City Copper and 28 years in O'Fallon, out in St Charles County. I've seen lots of people die over the years, even saved a life one time when I found a guy hanging in a tree in a back yard...that one made the hair on my neck stand up when I saw it...but I am squeamish about watching a hanging...even on video, or still image.

I had heard that there was a video about the Taliban beheading a Western captive. So my curiosity got the better of me and I found it.I wish I could erase that memory from my mind, but I can't. :(

I'm with you...I think there was a video of Daniel Pearl being beheaded and I absolutely refused to look at that. Years ago I had a partner in St Louis City that wanted to stop by the morgue and see the results of a triple murder/suicide arson. I kept telling him no and he finally badgered me into it when we drove by the morgue. He was green by the time we left and finally admitted he should not have done that. I was able to erase it from my mind, but he was not. He later got another coat of PTSD when he was the primary officer on a robbery wherein the bad buys herded seven people to the back of the store and tried to execute all of them to have no witnesses left. Five of the seven died at the scene and one died later. He told me over a couple of beers some 25 years later that it was the bloodiest scene he had ever seen and could not ever erase it from his mind.
