I forget whether it was Jerry C or Nikonian who turned me on to the Cowboy Ring Flash, but I'm thinking I really like it! Here are some shots of a Jumper that I took tonight. Used a tripod with these.

I also use an O-Flash. It is 3/4-circle in shape, not a true "ring". And I still do not understand the "Cowboy" term in your description. I bought my O-Flash on eBay, and it is mounted to a Nikon SB-600 speedlight. To date, it is my sole source of macro illumination.

Produced by "Cowboy Studio". I'm using with an SB-700. As I look at it, you are right, isn't really a full ring. And as you said, it is a great flash aid for macro photography. I have a pair of SB-200's with the lens mount ring and they have become off camera flashes. They were a bunch more expensive than the O Flash!
