I went back to my rotting log this morning and found a large colony of Crematogaster, commonly called Acrobat ants. As soon as I pulled away the bark and exposed them, they immediately started grabbing the young and hustling them off to safety.
The third photo enlargement shows the head of one specimen and the posterior of another, illustrating the stout propodeal spines and heart shaped abdomen characteristic of this genus.
It's probably C. lineolata, but I'm not proficient enough with the taxonomy of this group to be sure.
These are small ants, maybe 2.5 to 3 mm in length.

It's always fascinated me that you can often look 'inside an otherwise cluttered photo and discover a much more interesting and detailed picture hidden there. I've attached one more for the series above because when I was screening pics to toss out, I realized this crop offered some detail that's even better than the ones above.

After further investigation, I now think the above species is Crematogaster ashmeadi.
