Aspect ratios

My Nikon D-90 sports a 2/3 aspect ratio, that is, 4 inches high and 6 wide. I am going bonkers looking for a canvas print site to produce a variety of sizes in this ratio. Just wondering, does anyone know why the camera's natural aspect ratio is different from normal frame and mat sizes?

The 2/3 aspect ratio comes from the 35mm format, which most digital dslr's have replaced. Picture formats still adhere to the 4/5 aspect ratio of much older cameras and I don't know why that is still adhered to in the framing industry. So one has to either crop the 2/3 format or go to custom framing.

Most print sizes tend to emulate the older full frame film camera dimensions, 4x5, 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 16x20 etc. These were actual negative sizes of film cameras long ago.

When composing your shot I suggest you take several shots and make sure you include some loosely composed shots so you have room to crop for whatever size frame or matte you might choose later.
