Been shooting for only a few years, but learned quickly how important light(direction and source) are. Patience helps also.
Here are a few recent shots--

good pix of the bird, nice and sharp. try not to cut off the birdfeeder. i know it is not easy to catch these things in flight and not always easy to take the time to frame the shot. next time, try a vertical shot so you can fit it all in.

This time I disagree with stubbles, I liked the last photo of the humming bird is really great. I think is is great because the top of the feed is bland and by cutting it off allows the humming bird to stand out more. Stubbles just my opinion

Well I love humming birds I have never seen them around my home. A friend of mine took a picture of her hummingbird feeder I have to agree with Rich Photos the feeders need to be improved on, she had seven hummingbirds at once. And I have to say I am a little jealous every time I come to introduce yourself Strubbles is here making comments, but when I started the 3rd of September Strubbles never critique my photos :( Spoken Image
Just kidding I might be scarred it he did.

Just a thought, get a pretty bird feeder or tape a flower around the opening and compose the shot on a tripod to show only the flower and the bird. Here is a pretty feeder.

That's one cool feeder ya got. Since my wife is from Jonesborough, maybe she can find one.
