Continous Ink System for Epson Printers

Does anyone have any experience with the Continuous Ink Systems for Epson Printers? I have an Epson R280 Photo printer which uses 5 ink cartridges and it gets very expensive to print anything much less photos. I am not sure how the external tanks work with the printer while the lid is closed. I appreciate anyone sharing their experience.

I tried the continuous ink system a few years ago with my Epson 1800. Aside from the fact that the colors were off, the system required constant maintenance. In order to get it to print, the lines had to be blown out and the heads cleaned with alcohol. It eventually got to be too much of a hassle and I threw out the system together with my printer. I currently have an Epson and I bite the bullet and pay for the Epson cartridges. Now when I need to print, I just hit the print button and it works.

CIS systems are a pain, prone to leakage in my experience. I use refillable carts in my printers, and refill with Cone Inks. Not sure if anyone makes the refillables for your printer? Google it.

I used CIS on Epson 2880. You need to printing a lot of pictures everyday. I bought one from Murat in the UK it sucks. the ink in tube dried after a couple weeks of non use. Get the refillable cartages.
Just my opinion.

Not worth the hassle if you only print a few images a week; if you print a LOT, then they do save you money on ink- but the maintenance is excessive. If you don't print a lot, then avoid like the plague.

Big pain... I had a R280; I love the prints. Hate the printer. Even with the factory cartridges it is a high maintenance printer. It used far more ink to clear the printheads thin ever got on paper. I eventually threw mine out a second story window. True story. I have an Epson large-format printer now. I think it's the R1900. It's more reliable. Still costs a lot to use.

Thanks for everyone's input... I want cheaper prints but it sounds like the maintenance is not worth the savings...

I print all my own. Just because I want it right away. Will be 83 next mounth and dont have time to waste waiting. I have an HP Photosmart Plus series- B209 and I love the prints I get. I print mostly 8 1/2 X 11. Color is fantastic. But like all printers Ive had It eats the ink. I just refilled it and have two box's on standby. Sometimes I print 50 or more at a time. This isn't their latest printer but It dose a pro job so I wont be getting a new one till this one goes belly up.

People with mid sized Epson PRO printers using individual ink bottles were able to use larger ink bottles from other Pro Epson printers via siphon tubes, but this is the only really successful economy move, involves hi volume use and still costs $$$ in ink.

You can get refillable carts for a lot of the more popular printers, I use a set in my 3880 and older 2200 model I am converting to a dedicated B&W printer. I have been using Cone Inks for almost two years, shortly after buying my 3880. Saving a ton of money on inks, as I probably print way too much, but I enjoy the printing as much as the capture. Printing can be done with coffee and music in the background ; ) plus by using refillable carts I am keeping lots of throw always out of our landfill !
