We live in SC and my wife wants to travel up the East Coast. We love photography of wildlife, the 4 legged type. Any suggestions on locations?
I hope others can be more helpful. My reaction is that the East Coast is home to Megalopolis, an overdeveloped area from Richmond to Portland, ME that offers little opportunity for wildlife. The Smokey Mountains and backwoods Virginia on one end, and the backcountry of Maine on the other come to mind, but "up the East Coast" ? Pretty urban and suburban, compared to your avatar of a Grizzly with a fish!
Your best chance at wildlife would probably be on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Have seen plenty of deer and a few bear. Moose & bear up in Maine, but you might not be going that far.
Thank You, your opinion is mine, now all I have to do is convince my wife is to go west again.
We'll probably be going into Canada will give it A try.
Thanks
Been to Yellowstone and/or Glacier? Wildlife mecca, not to mention the other geographic sites!!
We've been to both including Alaska. We worked at Glacier for 5 months on the East side, wife worked in the gift shop and I drove the Red Bus's I think it's the most picturesque Park in the lower 48 bar none.
You might consider New Hampshire an d Maine.
NH is 95% wilderness and Maine even more so.
Tons of places to shoot Moose and not uncommon to see black bear in NH or Maine.
Route 302 in NH is actually called Moose Alley. Also plenty of great waterfalls to shoot. North Conway NH, is a very scenic area. Send for Mass, NH, Maine and Vermont visitors guides. Then there is upstate New York, Adirondack Mountain area, Catskill Mountain area and the Finger lakes offer vast photo opportunities.
Have Fun!
There is an island south of ocean city Maryland that is famous for their wild horses. Can drive amongst them. Name begins with an Asa, can say it but can't spell it. If you like tourist traps, Ocean City is a must. Many of their inhabitents have been known to end up on all fours. Near Cambridge, MD is the Blackwater wildlife refuge that you can drive through, worth the trip. Have been told that New Jersey has some very pretty country and several wildlife refuges. While the drive on the blue ridge parkway can have some fantastic views, I never had much luck finding wildlife. Another great visit is the aquarium at the inner harbor, Baltimore, MD. The roof is an exotic bird aviary that is great for photographs.

There are lots of black bears in the Great Dismal swamp (VA). There are wild horses on Currituck (NC) and Assateague Island (VA).
Bultaco you have gotten some good advice on places to go.I live in Virginia but I am from New hampshire. My job landed me in Virginia 20 years ago.I have been to the blue ridge, chincoteague island here.I have gotten some great shots.I have been fortunate to travel the east coast to shoot wildlife and landscapes and have found no shortage of wildlife. As you go further north one place I always reccomend is moose alley in pittsburg New Hampshire. The three connecticut lakes are also there.Wild turkeys are every where they are fast. One shot I did get and one of my favorites is three bear cubs in a tree.Right place at the right time as is a lot of shots with wildlife.Moose alley is route 3 off interstate 93 throuhg the white mountains.one beautiful ride.this will also take you into Canada. You need a passport now to get into Canada.I do not think you will be dissapointed if you decide to do this.good luck on what you decide to do and have fun.Have a safe trip.

If you decide to go to Canada, go to all 3 Maritime provinces. There's so much to see, but here are 3 highlights I would suggest: the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia (go clockwise so as not to be driving along the seaside side of the road - cliffs!) , the beaches along the north coast of Prince Edward Island.
Thank all of you for the info. Will give all of them a try. If possible I try to stay out of heavy traffic as our rig is 54 ft long.
