My wife and I have lived in SWNM for almost 8 yrs.
We found there are more people you can talk to around here
even though we are not bilingual.
We joined a senior center in Summer of 2005, and found many
people who volunteer and others who are having medical
problems. My wife worked for a local hospital for about 52
weeks over a span of 3 yrs.
The Senior Center helps those over 55 with physical, social and
intellectual improvements in their lives. Some come here for
their daily meal. Many come by bus and live in a Hospice. Their
only social contacts are located here. They are mostly poor and
retired, born here and served in the military or educational
system, or agriculture. They rely on games, crafts and other
tools to keep busy. Each week they had schedule of events
including music and dance for the "oldtimers".
Some weekly events were cancelled due to expenses.
Much of the cost of running this center come from donations.
They chat with strangers and friends alike.
I never found a place like this in NY or Ca.
We have enjoyed ourselves and can get the weekly and monthly newsletters that picked up. They also have a library and
VHS/DVD limited selection.
If most areas of the country treated strangers like they do here
we would not have some of the problems.
We go about 3 X per month and pay our way. Many cannot
afford the paltry sum. Afterall, This state has 54% poverty level.
Medicare and Medicaid are their only providers for many.
This state does have the greatest % of scientists, engineers and
Ph'ds in the country per capita. 2 Million people live here with a
state budget of around $6B. 13% of the population are over 65.
Have a great, safe, Easter week.
Thank you UHH for the website.
My daughter moved to NM to go to UNM this last fall. I am so impressed by the people there. Wherever you go people are so friendly and strike up a conversation. My daughter is very shy and has a problem with social anxiety but she is thriving there. In addition to the things you mentioned NM has an AMAZING arts and music culture. She is enrolled in a program called the Heritage Music Project where she is making her own cello. She has found her passion and has decided to become a Luthier. Attached are some pics of cello.

Very nice. Good luck to your daughter. Luck is the residue of
design.
