Hi I need a bit of help here please,,, I know the 'sync' speed of the D90 is 1/200s but lately I have been using flash for portraits, setting my D90 to 'iso2oo' 'SS 1/200s App f/9 Spot mtr. WB flash..70mm prime lens,,, I have found that all the shots taken with these setting have a black blurred band at the bottom in horizontal and on the right side in portrait , Surely I am shooting the shutter speed within the camers 'spec' If I change the appeture it is the same..Only when I go down to 1/160s is shoots normally. I have checked back on some images taken last weeks, same shutter speed. 1/200s and they are fine. I think it may have started happening when I got a new flash trigger Yongnuo RF-603N transcievers, but surely these cant make my camera out of its 'Norm 1/200s' sync speed,,, Any help much apprecciated...Thanks
Jimmy

HI there,, no didn't use a lens hood on my 70mm 2.8.. I'v just noticed its been happening for quite a while, with all my lenses, the shots at 1/160s are ok,, but at 1/200s the band is in the image,,It looks to me as if its the new triggers I have just bought,, or my sync speed on my camera is misfunctioning, I use everything in manual.. camera and flashes,,This has got me stumpped this one,,, I'm waiting for my batteries to charge and then going to experiment again,,thanks for the replies up to now..

Your radio triggers aren ' t responsive enough. I have that same dilema with my less expensive ones too. I have to use 1/160th or lower. If you are shooting in a studio setting inside, it should not be a problem. If you try to mix ambient light, that's going to cause a problem.

Posting some pictures as samples are priceless when asking specific questions about photo problems. Otherwise any advice is pretty much a guess.

Yip that's why I wanted to use 1/200s to totally cut the ambient light,, I wouldn't care I been using cheep cactus triggers for ages but I hate the way the flash sits on top of the recievers, they seem unsteady, so I bought 2 sets of the yongnuo 603n, as they sit on the horizontal plane of the transiever,, I'm going to retry the Cactus again and see if thats the problem... I'm sure the problem just started when I switched to the Yongnuo brand,,,,,
Thanks for your response,,,

MT,,,Sory to say this but,,,,It's pointless posting pics,,,,It's quite obvious what black banding is across the bottom of an image,,, or the side of an image depending upon if it's in landscape or portrait,,,, The problem is camera sync,,,I was just wanting to know why !!
Thanks for your reply ,,

I certenly will, there is at the moment another post on here about a gentleman getting the Yongnuo 603n setup, So he might be interested to know if they are slow to respond, I will do more tests later today to verify if it is the Yongnuo's causing the problem.......

My Calumet triggers go to 1/250th with my Nikons.
Thay make a model optimized for Canon as well.
Only $60 plus shipping at the moment.
Doubles as a remote camera trigger.
http://www.calumetphoto.com/eng/product/calumet_pro_series_2_4ghz_4_channel_wireless_trigger_kit_optimized_for_nikon_flash_systems/cf0094
The transmitter has a shoe on it which will allow you to have a flash on the camera.

Well I just finished testing and my conclusion ::
Nikon D90.. ISO 200.. Apature 5.6.. WB flash.. Spot metering..
Nikon SB800...Yongnuo RF-603N.. Vivitar 285hv,,,Cactus v2...

When the SB800 is on camera it syncs up to 200 with no black banding,,,(it won't go higher than 200).But with FP in camera ON the SB800 will flash up to 4000 with NO Black banding..

When the Vivitar is on camera it goes to 250 with NO banding regardless of the FP setting,,

With OFF camera flash and either of the remotes the Camera shows signs of Black banding at 200. !! With Both flashes

In Commander mode the SB800 goes to 200 WITHOUT Black Banding,,(infact I got it to go to 4000 without banding)

So my findings are;; when I use either flash off camera with either of the two remotes I get Black banding at a Shutter speed of 200 and above,,,
Maybe a more expensive set of remotes might perform better but for the time being I will just have to shoot at 160th.
Hope this helps anyone wanting to buy a cheap set of remotes,,, If anyone can lend a hand to resolve this problem, Please let me know,,,,,
Jimmy

Is that Vivitar 285 designed to use with Digital Camera shutters? I'm just asking, as older flashes had higher trigger voltages that could fry modern shutters.
