In July of 2009 Bakersfield National Cemetery in the White Wolf area of the Tehachapi Mountains is nestled amidst wide-open stretches, mountain vistas and rolling grazing land where both cattle and camels once roamed. For more informatin go to http://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/bakersfield.asp

My friends and I have attended many bike runs to collect funds to help build this cemetery. This time of year it's a beautiful place to honor our veterans at their final resting place. I thought I would share some of the highlights.

Thank you Andrew I also like the last place. I think the little bench under that huge Oak tree is such a peaceful place.

Absolutely a fitting tribute that you should support such a place. Should we ever meet in real time I would want to shake your hand and say thank you.

As for the pics..... wow. When I saw them I went back into the UHH archives to look at some of your earlier stuff and the difference is amazing.

#1 Almost perfect composition with the curve of the road the words on the wall and the slope of the hill all leading to the same point. Unfortunately there is a white notice board there which for me just jars a little, a slightly different angle may have worked better. There is a halo on the hill but somehow with this subject matter it doesn't look out of place. Its not often that I say that I like a halo but this is one of those times. But the most beautiful touch is the flag in the background at the highest point of the scene. Very very nicely done.

#2 This is the pick of the set for me. Beautiful composition. It would have been tempting to do too much the HDR thing and bring out details in the branches but that would have drawn us away from the foreground. But by leaving the branches very dark it makes the columns stand out all the more while at the same time giving the sense of the columns being embraced by the tree and those who remember. And the flag in the distance. A wonderful shot don't change a thing, print it frame it and hang it in a special place because its a beauty.

#3 Love the subject matter and particularly the way that the two strong white lines (road and flagpole) both divide the pic but at the same time frame each of the sections. Its a very strong pic but I don't think you quite got the light. The white square seems a little too intense and the tree could have been just a tad brighter to bring out more detail. But as far as composition goes, another really interesting piece of work.

#4 What a powerful image full of symbolism. The precision of the gravestone lines is overarched by the tree which again gives me the feeling of the tree embracing those buried there. The seat, even though its empty, is there for those who do visit, so there is the sense of watching and remembering. But a couple of points. The gravestones are on the edge of being blown but thats not crucial but there is a purple tinge to them as well as purple fringing in the leaves ie chromatic aberration. If you select the leaves and then select the group of gravestones and desaturate magenta in both cases it will quickly fix the problem. The other point is also a simple fix. The whole impact of the pic is the contrast of the military precision of the gravestones with the flowing lines of the surrounding country. But all of the headstones and the fenceposts are leaning to the left which undercuts the power of the pic. Another quick fix in PS and you end up with an amazing pic.

Very impressed with this set (as you might have gathered) It really makes a difference when you care about what you are taking pics of, and you obviously do.

Hope this helps.

Peter

I'm not showing a download for the second photo, and I would have liked to have enlarged it for content clarity.

I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to make such nice comments on my post. I am not trying to ignore anyone and I am sorry I haven't been here to reply sooner.

I have been swamped at work, I was gone all weekend on Easter away from my computer, plus I am working on a memorial video every night after work for a friends service who passed unexpectedly.

I should be able to get back more often soon. I got a new lens for my camera and I haven't even been able to try it out yet and I can't wait!
