This is giving me a headache!

Back to the aphids... this time with 105g, full 68mm extension tubes with the Raynox 250 added on for what I believe is around 3x. These were further cropped from 1/6 to 1/15th of the frame.
My D300 was set @ 1/80 @ iso 320 & f/22. Heavy overcast and lightly sprinkling.

I think I need to find something bigger... but I wanted to compare results with the objective. This quality is a little better-- but it is optical glass rather than a cheap microscope objective.

I think that you may be onto something. How dark was your focusing view? That has always been the determining factor for good manual focus. Did you compare A-F with manual focus?

All available light? Any speedlight illumination?

I haven't tried A-F, all manual focus & it's a pain. I did use my SB-400 @ manual 1/10. But I'll try this with the exposure lock & see if the keep rate improves. I believe the exposure setting is pretty close to daylight-- maybe a tad under exposed. I usually hand meter-- but not this time.
Yes the screen is dim--- but my major problem is that they are too small for me to see & of course the DOF is razor thin. I may look into one of those 3x diopters... (I'm 59 and my eyes have never been 20-20. Blurryeyed thinks he has it bad!)
Because they were aphids and could not move quickly from the stem (they do move, but I knew I would be cropping), I was able to use my tripod with focusing rail. My technique was to move the macro knob incrementally while hitting the shutter. I discarded a lot. I'm pretty satisfied with these given the magnification. I'd love to try a 65 MP-E, but that would mean going over to the dark side. I think I'm ready for something larger.

By the way these are much better than the last series you posted, cleaner and sharper. A few of the sites I visit use pen lights mounted to the side of lens and shin on subject, just for the reasons here. When I get down to 3x I just can't see either. If your using the tripod, why not use live view
By the way I turned the DCR-250 around and it looks like I'm getting better DOF.

I agree that they are better so I'll probably move away fro using the objective. It's kind of a pain to use anyway-- and I get no aperture info. I'll try live view as well. Do you have/use one of those 3x focusing gizmos? Or maybe that was Nikonian?
Now if only I could find some jumpers...

How is the 250 attached? a reverse lens adapter?

While in live view use the magnifier on the viewer to make it big. I use this when fine focusing my lens.

Geff: You shoot Canon, right? Have you ever tried an MP-E? It's way out of my budget, especially since I would have to switch.
And send me some bees-- I need something larger!

Thanks. I'll have to dig through my "junk" drawer to see if I have something that will fit. What do you have it reverse mounted on?

No, I have never tried the MP-E but I do understand that it is the Mac Daddy of all Macro lenses... I do think that you can come up with cheap stuff that will do almost as well. I have seen some Flickr pages that are absolutely awesome... done with reversed lenses and such.

Are you mounting directly on tubes or your 105?

I use a Tokina 100mm macro lens. I'm also playing with other combos. I love the magnification of the tubes plus macro lens, but Hate the contrasty flare I'm getting not to mention the loss of DOF. Reversing this conversion lens has been the only step forward in Magnification and no lose in DOF. This is the direction I want to head 3XPlus with Good DOF
