I´m in Lima, Peru and never got a straight answer as to what kind of voltage transformer I need US-Peru 110-220. I would like to be able to charge my camera batteries without my charger going up in smoke.

Maybe I can find one here, but I need pictures. Thanks for your help guys!!! :-)

You need to know the cycles, are they 50 or 60 Hz? The biggest problem is generally the plugs prong configuration. If you have your travel charger kit it should have the plug you need. If not a local camera store should be able to provide one at very little cost.

My Nikon chargers work automatically on both 110 & 240V as well as 50/60 Hz. Check the back of your charger - you may not need a transformer, only a plug converter.

The cycles don't matter unless you are trying to run a clock. Just ensure that the transformer you get has a 220vac input and a 110vac output. The battery charger has an additional transformer to take 110vac to whatever voltage is required.
However, check your battery charger first. Many of them have dual input capabilities. If so, it will be written on the battery charger similar to: "110vac-240vac input."

Thanks folks, I think I got it. I charged a useless cell phone and it worked. Pictures will come! ;-)

The Canon chargers are OK here. I only needed to use the plug converter. Thank you so much everybody. Now I know I will have full batteries when I go to Cusco and Machu Piichu. :-)

I recall that when I was in Cusco there were two electrical outlets side by side in our hotel room. One was for 110 and the other was for 220 volts and the plug configeration was simular! Had to make sure I used the correct outlet. Chargers that will use 110 or 220 volts without converters there is no problem but check your charger first. I still carry a converter and a selection of addapter plugs. You can go on the net and find sites that list addapter plugs and voltage by country.

This not technically correct. Transformers require a heavier duty core structure to sustain function in a 50hz environment without oversaturation of the core and/or overheating of the coils as compared to a 60hz system. Most wound transformers or equivalent solid state voltage converters today are built to 50hz standards and automatically are capable of 60hz operation. The opposite is not true. Thus a 50/60hz spec transformer is approved/built for 50hz operation whereas an old 60hz only specified unit has the potential for a short, fiery life in a 50hz environment.

Thank you! Both my Canon chargers work here, even without a plug converter. I´m so glad that Canon enabled this in their design.

Made a trip to Caral today, the site of pre-Inca period going back 3000 BC. I managed to get some awesome pictures...
Tomorrow is the journey to Cusco and Macu Piichu. I look forward to sharing my pics when I get back to the US April 6.

I´m happy to include Ugly Hedgehog members on my mind blowing trip in Peru!!!
