Without tubes, your 105-mm macro lens can achieve 1:1 mag at MWD (6.3-inches).
With tubes, your 105-mm macro lens can achieve 2:1 mag at MWD (about 4-inches).
What was your WD for these photos?

must have been 4", as i had lens set at 1:1 (MFD) with full set of tubes, and moved the camera in to focus. it was pretty close and the fly was very small.

You just described set-up for 2:1 magnification (2x life-size) capture.
