Eighty years ago, Germany's parliament passed the "Enabling Act." From that point on, Adolf Hitler could enact laws without the need of parliamentary approval. Only one party valiantly resisted.

”IF” for 21st Century Americans   ~~

If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing  without a license, but not for being in the country illegally — you might live   in a nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If you have to get your parents’ permission to go on a field trip or take an   aspirin in school, but not to get an abortion — you might live in a nation   founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If you have to show identification to board an airplane, cash a check, buy liquor, or   check out a library book, but not to vote who runs the government — you might   live in a nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If the government wants to ban stable,   law-abiding citizens from owning gun magazines with more than ten rounds, but   gives twenty F-16 fighter jets to the crazy new leaders in Egypt — you might   live in a nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If, in the nation’s largest city, you can buy two  16-ounce sodas, but not a 24-ounce soda because 24-ounces of a sugary drink   might make you fat — you might live in a nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If an 80-year-old woman or a three-year-old   girl confined to a wheelchair can be strip - searched by   the TSA but a woman in a hijab is only subject to having her neck and head   searched — you might live in a nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots. .

If your government believes that the best way to  eradicate trillions of dollars of debt is to spend trillions more — you might   live in a nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If a seven - year - old boy can be thrown out of school for saying his teacher is “cute,” but hosting a sexual exploration or diversity class in grade school is   perfectly acceptable — you might live in a nation founded by geniuses but run   by idiots.

If children are forcibly removed from  parents who discipline them with spankings while children of addicts are left   in filth- and drug - infested “homes” — you might live in a   nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If   hard work and success are met with higher taxes and more government intrusion, while not working is rewarded with EBT cards, WIC checks, Medicaid, subsidized housing, and free cell phones — you might live in a nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If the government’s plan for getting people back to work is to provide incentives for not working through 99 weeks of unemployment checks without any  requirement to prove they sought but couldn’t find work —   you might live in a nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If you pay your mortgage faithfully, denying   yourself the newest big screen TV while your neighbor buys iPhones, wall-sized plasma do-it-all TV’s and new cars, and the government forgives his debt when he defaults on his mortgage — you might live in a nation founded by geniuses   but run by idiots.

If being stripped of the ability to defend yourself makes you more “safe” according to the   government — you might live in a nation founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

I agree with you that some (not all) of government policies are asinine. At the same time, it is very wrong for you to disparage your own nation by ending your remarks with the words "What a Country!!!"
I have been in other countries including those within the Middle East and some are real shit-holes where almost everyone living there, as well as some who say they "hate" us, would like to trade places with disgruntled Americans like yourself.
But then, maybe there's a solution to you dissatisfaction if you can find yourself living a few years in one of those same shit-holes.
(1) Among them, taxes are generally low and many people there often do not pay their taxes in any case.
(2) You won't have to worry about voter fraud since most people aren't allowed to vote.
(3) There's no unemployment benefits since out-of-work people have the right to starve along with their kids.
(4) Subsidized housing? Don't worry about that. People sleep out in the streets at night while the dead are picked up in the morning and carted off to land fills.
(5) Hooray for you: There's no Medicaid! People just get sick and die...No big deal.
(6) You got a problem with U.S. schools? How about a country where your son is lucky to reach 4th grade and your daughter is not allowed to attend school at all.
(7) You hate restrictive gun laws...Why worry? You may want to try Iraq where many of your own neighbors are carrying AK-47s. (Just make sure you belong to the right religious sect).
It's a fair-sized guess that if you spend a few years as a resident of one of these low tax and regulation free countries you'll be soon high-tailing it back to the good old and repressive U.S.A.

Thanks for putting things in perspective, Matt. I have traveled extensively as well and find it pathetic how so many people complain about how bad it is in America. Despite our shortcomings, we are privileged to live in a paradise compared to most other countries in the world.

That's all well and good but we're not talking about those countries, we're talking about America. Most of those Middle Eatern countries have always been shitholes and always will be until the unlikely day that the people there get tired of being treated like slaves.

I doubt that anyone with a brain in their head can look at the USA as it was in the 40's, 50's, etc and look at it the way it is now and then say we're better off.

The government is FAR more intrusive in our personal lives. Political correctness has been risen to an art form. The economy seems to continually teeter on the brink and the government sponsored social programs have Uncle Sam's hand in the back pockets of the lucky ones that actually have jobs to give benefits to the illegals.

Our current government structure (at least at the federal and state levels) is to a analogous to a doctor that constanly treats the patient's minor symptoms with no concerrn about coming up with a cure for the underlying, life threatening disease.

It's fine to put things in the perspective of "Us versus Them". A far better perspective would be to look at where we were versus where we are.

As the OP says, we live in a country founded by geniuses and run by idiots. Considering how far we've fallen from the Founding Fathers intent and being old enough to see where we've been and where we are now, I have to agree "What a country".

I don't have a problem with legal immigration. It's when we let, literally, millions flood over the boarders to take advantage of our government benefits and pay no taxes because they legally don't exist while the tax paying registered members of society have to pick up the slack is where I have a problem.

I'm a second generation naturalized American. I was born here and my parents were born here. My grandparents on both sides immigrated from Europe. They had to go through Ellis Island and go through the naturalization process. What's the big deal?

Many of the "minorities" you mention sneak across the boarder with no intention of registering with the government and the rest of us pay the price in higher taxes and increased crime rates.

Why collect a paycheck at all? We should just hand all of our money over to the governmment to take care of these "minorities" who take jobs without paying taxes and send the money back home.

This country was literally founded by minorities. Like everthing else, there's a right way and a wrong way. What this government is doing is DEFINITELY the wrong way.

Ron K;
Almost all your assertions have a deep pessimism, and some impotence.
I have also lived. But I wonder how many time you write to your representative to said the Patriot Act shall be derrogue now?

How many times have you read the constitution of the nation, and your state?

I think you should start out there, the complaint in a vacuum does not move the conscience of your fellow citizens from tomorrow begins and true that everything changes.
Good luck

Contrary to opinion- at least your opinion - I have read the Bill of Rights and the Constitution in their entirety and many times. That's where and why my opinion formed, but bless your Liberal heart for caring.

No I am not liberal, I am a libertarian perhaps a litle anarchist.
Our Constitution is not an easy text to understand and the Bill of Rights is a joke of the funder father to get it aproved.
However we most return to the Constitution and force Congress to derrogue the Patriot Act. As soon as possible we are in really dangers moments our government can be a dictatorship with only a firm of whoever in the Precidency, and then Congress can not reversed it. Think a litle.
Good Luck
