Hi all,
can someone tell me the best way to use Magic Lantern in my 5D MKII for photography not video.Am I right in thinking that you need a large capacity card because you use the same card that the firmware is on.

Asking for "the best way" is like asking how to take pictures. :-D

Go to MagicLantern's new site and read up under the FAQ and FORUM sections.
http://wiki.magiclantern.fm

As to "need(ing) a large capacity card", use the same size you would normally use. The files only take up about 12 MB on the card.
Two or three photos would use about the same space.

Note:
You should use a 32 GB card the FIRST time you install the program to the camera. After that, you can use 64 GBs.
Install the MagicLantern files on each card that you will use.

Oops. I was told 64 GBs were not usable in the 5D Mark II, 32 being the max. Can you comment further ?

Read the whole article here: http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/blogs/2012/eos_5dmii_50d_firmware_update.shtml

Quote:
EOS 5D Mark II Firmware Version 2.1.2 and EOS 50D Firmware Version 1.0.9 include the following improvement:

Optimizes the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 50D’s performance when using certain UDMA 7-compatible CF cards released in February 2012 or later, such as the 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and large-capacity 256GB CF cards in the Lexar Professional CF 1000X series that were sequentially released from late February onward.

When using these CF cards with the EOS 5D Mark II, a card error (Err02) may occur during shooting or when initializing the card. This is caused by a change in the UDMA 7’s control and process method of the above CF cards, that is different from that of the conventional cards, and outside the margin of compatibility of the EOS 5D Mark II (depending on the controller used in the cards).

Although the camera complies with the standards, this update will expand the margin of compatibility of the camera, making it compatible with the target CF cards once the firmware update is installed.

:-D So it would appear that 32 GB is not the max.
