Attended a Friday morning Meet-Up outing to the Fullerton Arboretum. I found a new (to me) large milkweed bush, with at least a dozen Monarch caterpillars (Danaus plexippus) of several instars.
Average exposure: Hand-held Nikon D5000 at ISO 400, with Nikkor 105G lens, 1/200-sec at f/16, partial sun & Nikon SB-600 speedlight with O-Flash 3/4-circle Fresnel prism attachment.
Caterpillar eating milkweed leaf from tip to stem. 1:2 mag (1/2 life-size).

Pair of early instar cats. 1:1 mag (life-size).
Dew covered Monarch chrysalis. 1:1 mag (life-size).

Thanks. I've book-marked it
Looks like a worthwhile trip for sure, great photos.
Great photos, recent articles about a smaller migration census had me worried that we wouldn't see any this year. I have ordered Milkweed plants for my garden.

Our California Monarchs do not migrate. About 100-miles from L.A., right on the coast, are several tree groves that host tens-of-thousands of over-wintering Monarchs. We basically have free-flying Monarchs about 10-months of the year.

I've put the Coronado Preserve on my bucket list. Thanks for the magnificent photo.

Do it. You won't be disappointed. I was there in December 2011. I would recommend a tripod and the longest telephoto lens you have. I had only my 105... and had to crop...but still got some decent shots....
