I have joined to assist my brothers and sisters in improving their photography skills. As a studio photography teacher I know that some of the best ideas come from the new artist, so I want to pick your brains as well.

I am new to my camera. It is a Nikon D3000 I wanted a large LDC screen so I could see what I am focusing on and I find I can't use it for focusing before I take my picture. I don't know why. I was not told that when I purchased it from Best Buy. I would also like to take a course to learn to use it and to learn more about photography. It just all seems so complicated.

I suggest you get a good basic book on digital photography. I recommen Jerry Hughes' "Easy Photo Classes". Here is the web location.

On most cameras, the LCD screen in "live view" is used to compose your image, but will only work for focussing in manual mode, e.g. where you turn off the lens's autofocus feature and turn the ring yourself. They reason they didn't tell you that at Best Buy is probably because they didn't know that either.
