I am planning to rent canon 24-70mm 2.8. L USM on my canon 60D for National Deaf Track & Field Champion on April 12-13, 2013. I choose 24-70 because I will be on the field and walk around with the runners, coaches during the events. I know 70-200 will be better but too close. 24-70 is better so. What is your recommanded, setting ? Like sport mode or TV, metering, program? I am learning.. Thanks for your help

I have that lens & its a dandy. I guess I would be inclined to go with the Tv mode to control shutter speed. For the action shots you'll want to keep it at least 400 or higher if you want to freeze the action. For panning shots around 30. Standing around candids, 160 +/- will work.

I think you chose the wrong lens, before you go to this meet, make sure you can get close enough to use this lens. You may need media credentials to get close enough and without them, you are going to be out of luck. For some reason track officials are the toughest on photographers and will force you into the stands or outside the fence. check with them before you go to make sure you can use that lens!

I would also rather have the 70-200 for track. Here is a link to a meet done in afternoon into the evening for whatever it is worth. setting may be viewd. I used a 1.4 teleconverter on a 70-200 till the lights came on then 70-200 at 2.8. http://blindman.smugmug.com/CaptainShreveTrack2012

Hames, if you are outdoors, you probably don't need the speed unless you want the bokeh. Though the 24-70 is truly a pro lens, you might consider the 24-105. It's slower but would give you the same wide end with a lot more versatility. Just a suggestion.
Depending on your camera I would use a dedicated focus point, back button focus and depending on the light, Tv or Av if you want the bokeh. Also a little panning here and there could look nice.
Sounds fun, good luck.
