I am not looking for another war of words concerning gun control. Just looking for some serious comments concerning the information found in Times volume 181 number 1 dated January 14, 2013.
From July 18, 1984, through December 14, 2012, there were 19 mass shooting committed. Out of the 19 mass shooting 9 were committed out side of the USA. There was a total of 352 death. From this total 189 death out side the USA, the balance 163 death committed in the USA. These mass shooting out side the USA having the strongest gun laws were Norway, Germany, Finland and England having some serious gun laws compare to the USA. How do we prevent these mass shooting here in the States? Let have comments without the personal attracts on each other, like poor grammar, dislike of other comments without a reason for the dislike, or comments that attack the USA. Do we have a problem here in the USA or is it a lack of using the laws on the books? For me what other countries do is not my business, it's here in the States I am concerned about.
Hopping for solid comments we can think about and maybe our elected official in Washington will think with there brains.
Thanks for taking the time to read and comment in advance.
This belongs in the Chit-Chat section since it has NOTHING to do with Photography!!
The bottom line is:
If someone wants to commite mass destruction, there is no law, no amounts of laws that can prevent it from taking place...
Laws are for law-abiding people who obey laws, NOT the lawless who for various reasons obey NO laws...

Something like the lock on your house Don, it's there for honest people.

Wolf-pack, thanks for recognizing that. No worries.
I'll throw in a comment:
Before anything is actually done, we need to place the blame properly. To blame an object for the actions of a human is ludicrous.
To pass laws in hopes of altering the behavior of a lawless criminal is ludicrous. Our government needs to get used to the fact that they are NOT the solution to all our problems. Sometimes it's best for them to sit down, and shut up.
These are not happy, productive, well-adjusted individuals committing these crimes. They are typically troubled, younger people who have past behavior problems, some stemming from mental illness, some from improper used of psychotropic drugs. Passing more laws is a superficial way to ineffectively deal with the problem.

I agree 100%

I recently read about a representative in FLA proposing a law that forces anybody who wants to buy bullets to take a mandatory anger management course. If you ask me, that's just silly!
Regardless of whether or not it is legal, if you want a gun, you'll get one. Hell, meth is illegal, people still get it if they want it.
That being said, I'm all for gun ownership. I don't feel a need to have one myself (I have a 7 year old kid in the house). But if I were to feel the need for one, I would like to be able to get one.
Sure, having a gun in the house increases the chance of getting shot, but walking across the street increases the chance of getting hit by a truck.
Do a background check, I got nothing to hide. But will that discover future behavior? Or who may have access to my gun safe? Or whether the gun would get stolen at some point?
Facts remain facts. No one is blaming guns, we are blaming the idiots who use the when they are readily available.
It is plain wrong to state that these idiots will just find another way of killing if guns are not available. Decades worth of data prove conclusively that homicide rates are inversely proportional to the tightness of gun control. Less guns and more control = less homicide. In most of the countries with effective gun homicide rate is 1 quarter of the US.
Gun control really works. Like, overwhelmingly. Look at the stats across the many countries where it is working so well. Homicides are way down, shootings are a fraction of their previous levels, and gun related deaths run at about 100 times lower than USA depending on which country you choose.
For those who want to protect 2nd amendment rights. Ask yourselves why the NRA are so desperate to prevent open debate on the issue. They will not allow politicians to speak in favour of gun control if they value their career. How does that sit against 1st amendment rights?

A friend of mine put ths succinctly. "Locks and bolts were meant to keep honest people out". I think that confirms your view?
I believe that the people who go out and do this want to go out with a bang. No pun intended, they want to see their name in the media, their face on TV and everyone making a big fuss over the caos they have created. The media is to blame for this. when something like this happens the whole worls stops to listen and watch. But it's only for an instant after a day or so everyone goes on about their business as if nothing ever happend. So why give these guys what they want. Why not just set a jail sentence that would make them think twice about doing a mass murder and insure they get the MAX sentence without it ever getting on the internet, TV, or newspaper.
