Was at a state pool tournament last weekend and decided to try some low light captures to see how the SX50 can handle that.
I haven't checked all of the EXIF data yet, but I used Program mode with ISO set to 6400 and for the most part the shots were taken at approx 1/30 sec, hand-held.

First shot should give an idea of the conditions. Exhibition hall in a convention center, NO windows, only lighting comes from the pool table lights.

Resized for posting, no cropping and no pp

They won't hold up to extreme blow-up, but for the conditions I think they came out pretty good.

I had it set to AWB. The light fixtures hanging above each table have 3 dark translucent green shades with either 60w or 100w incandescent bulbs in them, and the cloth on all the tables was the 'standard' pool table green.

The photos look pretty much the way the scene looked to the naked eye.

Wow - very nice job. I have the sx 30 and held the sx 50 but wasn't sure I liked the feel of it. I may go shopping again.... I am not happy with the 30 because of the vignetting and soft focus.

I haven't noticed any vignetting with the SX50 and the focus doesn't seem 'soft' to me unless I just miss the focus! And you can go into the setup to adjust saturation/contrast/sharpness/etc.

If you do go shopping for the SX50, and think about buying it, check out Amazon.com for the price first. Then if you have a BestBuy or something similar you may be able to get a 'price match' on it. I did that and got it for $389!!! I didn't tell the BestBuy people, but I did all my handling of it at Walmart. Then I asked Walmart if they would price match to Amazon.com and they said no, so I told them I was going to go over to Best Buy to make my purchase!! :lol: :lol:

Good advice. I like to handle a camera before I buy it because it really has to feel right to you. I am sure you know exactly what I mean. Did you have to prove to best buy that you could get it at amazon for that price and if so how did you go about proving it? (I don't shop wal-mart unless I have no choice LOL)

The BestBuy sales associate went to one of their terminals and looked it up. I did have the page printed out, but they went directly online to look it up.

Just check the online price @ Amazon first if you go to do it so you know what Amazon has it for. I have seen it locally here as low as $409, BestBuy is about $429 right now.

Sam's Club has them for $399 presently. Thinking very seriously to bring on Rome trip instead of Canon 5D Mk2 with lens needed.

Other than 'action' shots in low light, the SX50 is AWESOME! But then not many cameras are good at fast action in low light without flash. And would sure be nice, eliminating the lens swaps you would have to do with the 5d unless you were using a VERY heavy LONG zoom!!

find price and try price match at your local camera store, with printout, mine has matched on 5 cameras this year, one for me and 4 for my granddaughters. one p510, one sx50 and 3 t3i 2 lens kits. and they know lots more than the big box stores.

Wahawk, Abby,cricket2 ggia, alby, as stated in a previous post, in May, was doing a 2 week trip to Italy, Sicily and Portugal and at 83 did not feel I wanted to lug my 5DMk2 with the long white lenses, etc, so did opt for the SX50, with the results on my site Acadiancountry.com and then click on Pilgrimage 2013, Rome., etc, and find 12 pages of SX50 shots, none with flash as they were prohibited indoors. Landscape shots from moving bus 40 to 50 mph, shot at ISO800, shutter 1/2000 with wide open aperture. Had only 1 week to read manual and study, so some are a bit off color due to experimenting. But all in all I am sold on it. Leaving Sept. 5 for 2 weeks in France and will definetly bring, and maybe also the Mk2 to compare as this will be a more slow paced trip,
