I signed up last year and have been content to read and learn from the many discussions and to view the wonderful pictures. Thankfully I am retired as I am finding I am getting addicted to the daily digest. I chose the name Sunflowerman because after taking down a 21 foot above ground pool, I elected to replace the area with a garden in which I planted a few sunflower seeds. Little did I know that squirrels and chipmunks would bury seeds and now I have quite a collection each year. They have been a wonderful source of entertainment watching and photgraphing the visitors - be it insect, mammal or bird. What made me come out of being just a lurker was the recent topic of reflex lenses, to which I will add my comments on the forum page. Hello to all.

Welcome, your story is like mine except I'm not retired yet. Hopefully soon so as to spend more time looking at pictures and communicating with others who have this delightful habbit.

I can go through 10 lbs of sunflower seeds a month in my bird feeder aka squirrel feeder .. I would be easier to grow them like you do.. Thanks I enjoyed your photos.

I currently have 24 feeders in our small suburban backyard. Black sunflower seeds are the most popular seed at my place. In summer on average I have about 40 sunflower plants in that 21 foot circle. The large yellow heads (16 - 18 inches in diameter) grow 14 feet tall. Others have multiple heads ( 6 - 8 inches in diameter) and are 6 - 8 feet tall. The seeds ripen at different times so there is a constant traffic flow in the fall. I have to harvest the seeds early I want for myself and to give away because there is nothing left at the end of the season. Probably have 2 photos for every seed produced. Cheap entertainment while I have a coffee on the deck. Put the seeds in as early as you can. Most of mine come up on their own having been planted in the fall when I compost the stalks and leaves and turn the soil.

We are just about done with frost here in Pa , I'll plant a few mediums and smalls , now and transplant out doors when the frost is done.i have some for the fall.
I get a tremendous variety of birds coming back north in the next few weeks.
My feeder are full. I agree I get more birds with the sunflowers than the seeds.
Thanks for the tips
Here is a picture from Playa del Carmen in December.
