Sustainable development began with Agenda 21 and has been incorporated into local planning boards across the country... For years there has been a low profile fight between the proponents of "Smart Growth" and Sustainable Development" and concerned groups of informed citizens who disagree with the zoning changes and the future development plans of their communities. These fights have been waged in local planning boards across the country but still the general public is for the most part unaware of the struggle. For years now federal grants have been used to incentivise so called "Smart Growth" which closely follows the recommendations that came out of UN Agenda 21 and the ICLEI organization that was established by the UN in 1990. ICLEI working with the Federal government has used federal grants to gain the buy in of local planning commissions across the country, part of the program centers around a series of very structured public planning meetings where a very prescribed program and workshops are used to develop a so called public consensus, the problem with these workshops is is that the workbooks and questions asked at the public workshops are designed to lead to predetermined outcomes and almost invariably what comes out are local planning boards amending their city or local plans to less single family housing, and more concentrated urban type multifamily development being incorporated into those plans... Less roads and more light rail... Cities and counties purchasing large tracks of preservation lands that will be excluded from development and have restricted use by humans... I know that it all sounds like a fantasy to those who have not been aware of this activity but has been well documented and video footage of both planning sessions and local planning meetings are available on the web so that you can see for yourself...

What this rant is really about is that President Obama is finally showing his hand in regard to this so called sustained development as he rolls out his Energy Plan and his plan to reduce US emissions in the future..... What is most striking about the linked article is the reports mentioned by the Department of Energy as they talk about our future energy plans.... much of the reduction of emissions will come from the future of "Smart Growth" where our local planning commissions stack us up like Sardines in High Density housing, and restrict commercial and business development into zones all designed to lessen the use of our cars... Again, light rail is a big part of this development as well... maybe you might want to look at what is going on at the planning board where you live, I was surprised to find out that my community bought into this program a few years back.
