All manufacturers will list a "minimum focusing distance" in the specs on their lenses. This will give you a good guideline for what you seek. Any large focal length lens with a fairly "close" minimum focusing distance will give you good results.

I think there are close-up lenes that screw onto your lens like a filter. Google close up lens and you will find a bunch of them.

Almost all lenses will take close-ups, macro is a different category of lens. There is a macro forum here that should answer all your questions. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html

Again, that depends on the focal length. I have a Nikon 28-300mm that focuses down to 13 inches at all focal lengths, to me that's fairly close for a 300mm, but not very close for 28mm. It does provide nice close-ups too.

i have a set of "macro"lens filters i'am still playing with, but they dont give you much shooting room.what i want to do is fill a frame with a bee or flower from about12"or so.

A "Macro" lens doesn't have to be used for "true-macro" shots, it just allows you to take pictures at a range that will ALLOW you to get true macro results. This capability would also make them excellent choices for 'close-ups' if the other lenses you look at don't allow you to get as close as you want.

Just about any lens that is a zoom and marketed as macro is actually a close up lens not a macro lens.

I have a set of close up filters and I don't have much luck with them. I have never been able to get a real crisp image compared to what I get with my 105mm Macro lens. I bought the more expensive close up filters but still not the results I was hoping for. Having said that it could well be that I just don't have the skills needed to get good results with them.
