the only difference is the other set was on a white fence, and this one was on the ground in the bark mulch.

Background brightness causing loss of contrast (when using tubes). Easy enough to test, and easy enough to remember.

No always that easy. Also depends on color of background/distance to background/ and how reflective it is. Not only does the sun interfere but also your flash. If you waited until the jumping spider and or other subject was in the perfect spot to reduce /light/flash returning up the lens and tubes you may not get any photos that day. I adjust Contrast then use noise reduction software to help with these type of shots.
I should also note at least for me I check my photos for sharpness continuously during the shoot. This lens flare/contrast does not always register well in your view finder, making it more difficult to always pin point the exact position/ camera/ background/ sun/ flash until after the fact.
