Yes it is OLD technology way surpassed now it was good for its day, d7000 leaves it cold

Why and what is wrong with the D3100

It has a higher iso range newer processor, more MPs, good video (better quality) etc etc

We use the D3100 as a backup, bought because it was better than the D90

Never had a D3100 but I do have the D90. Love that camera. I mainly keep the Sigma 10-20 on it. They seem like a perfect match. I have made several 20x30 prints from it and they came out beautifully. If the price is right, go for it.

The D90 has a motor for focusing lenses without. And there are buys on eBay. I love mine. - Dave

Snapsort rates the D90 significantly higher.

Stay on point: Grand's topic is D3100 or D90.

I just found the D90 listed at Adorama for $599 new. One heck of a deal. The D90 has the focusing motor built into the body, which the D3100 does not. The D90 will shoot in Commander mode which the D3100 will not.

And did I mention "FREE SHIPPING".

I have the D90 and it is truly a great camera and I'm certain it will do far more than you'll ever ask it to do. I have no problem recommending the D90 over the D3100 wouldn't even think twice. As banjonut points out the D90 has the focusing motor built into the body and the commander mode is truly a great feature.

I've had a D90 for a couple of years and really like it. 12 MP is plenty, I've made big prints that are very sharp (20 x 24"). I also have a D600, no doubt the IQ is somewhat better, but I still find myself grabbing the D90, especially when looking for long telephoto work, as the IQ on 300mm shot (450mm equivalent on the crop sensor) is indistinguishable from the same shot at 300mm with the D600 cropped to create the same image size in print. The D90 is like a comfortable old shoe, just keep wanting to use it! My son has the D5100 and I'd never swap my D90 for it!

Hi,

I have a Nikon D90, it was my first digital camera and I loved it. My girlfriend has a Nikon D3100. After playing with both cameras, I believe the D90 has a lot more features than the D3100. But the D90's technology is old even though its still a very nice camera.
You should take a minute and think about your photography needs and decide from there. Good luck
