What lenses can I use?

Hi fellow hoggers! Got a question for you. My daughter just got back into photography with the recent purchase of a Canon EOS Rebel XS 1000 D. My question is, will the lenses from her old Rebel film camera work with the dslr that she just bought? Thanks for any help.

Yes. But unless she has bought the kit lens with the D1000, she may be lacking a wide angle lens, because of the "crop" factor. Her old 28-80mm lens will give her a maximum wide angle equivalent of a 35mm lens. Not bad, but not as wide as a 18-55.

Lenses for the old Rebel film camera are Canon EF lenses - the auto-focus will work just fine.

She will have to manually focus....but the lens should fit.

If they are EF or EF-s lenses and not FD lenses then yes.

All the Rebel bodies are EOS system, digital OR film, so they will definitely work.

The new camera will work with any Canon EF lens. Older 3rd party lenses may be a different story, though. I once tried a early 90's or late 80's Sigma lens that worked on EOS film, and some early digital cameras, but would not work on a newer than 2001 Canon DSLR.

If they come from a film camera they could not possibly be EF-S

They are not EF-S they are EF. So I guess they'll work.

I like my Nikons as I can still use lenses almost all the way back to the 60's I still use my old Ai & Ais mount manual focus lenses on my D300. Some limitations, but it has saved me money from having to go out & replace them all with AF lenses. Thus I am able to use the older "pro" lenses from film days until such time as I can afford to replace them with AF versions. I did have to get a Sigma 10-20mm so as to have a wider angle, wide angle lens as the widest I had with film was 20mm (which is only a 30mm angle of view on the D300)

Yes, any of the EF and EFS lenses will work on that body. There is the 1.6 multiplier since it's less than full frame, ie. 50mm comes out at 80mm.
