Pelicans day in 3 parts.
Our Australian pelican has different plumage to others around the world but I guess they are just as facinating..
Soars effortlessly up to 56kms an hour and commonly 1000 to 3000 ft high using thermals. Wing span around 8 foot. Life span 10 to 25 years or more. Large orange/yellow bill and throat pouch. Pouch turns red in breeding season. Fully extended the pouch can hold up to 13 litres of water.Bill and pouch used forcatching food and draining off water, and turning food to swallow it head first.
They nest on the ground in a scrape lined with vegetation, feathers etc. 1-3 eggs are incubated on the parents feet.
Pelican chicks can communicate with their mothers while in the egg if they are too hot or cold.
About a month old the chicks form creches of up to 100 birds for about2 months to grow and learn to fly
Juveniles have grey/brown markings instead of black
I have sent pics in lots of 8
