I am trying to find a lens that is not exceedingly heavy to use as a walk around lens for example in Europe.
I have a D600 Nikon which I love and some excellent lenses, but most are so heavy I cannot walk around with them. Any suggestions for a quality lens that is not as heavy. I have looked at the 24-85 f/2.8, but the reviews are not good for this lens. I am not a pro but like a really sharp photo. I have the following:
14-24 f/2.8...very heavy
24-70 f/2.8...very heavy
85mm f/1.8
50mm f/1.4
28-300 f/3.5...ok for distance but not sharp enough to walk around with and heavy.
I end up using the 50mm and 85mm much of the time due to the weight. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
When I'm walking around on a serious photo day, I carry my 70-200 2.8 on my 50D and my 300 2.8 on my D60.
I wouldn't consider taking anything smaller.
the 70-200 must be a great lens, but really to heavy for me.
I understand about the weight. I endure it for the quality.
You might want to consider a bridge camera that will give you the reach and not much weight.
Will check into that. Actually not sure what a bridge camera is.
A bridge camera is one that looks like a DSLR but has a zoom lens that is not interchangeable.

Try Nikon P-510 or Powershot SX50
I'd say the 28 to 300 should be your best bet for amount of coverage. It is not in the same league as the f2.8 glass you own. If it isn't performing to your expectations perhaps it is how you are using it? Use aperture priority and close it down 2 stops, use Stabilization if hand held. Don't expect it to be the same level as your f2.8 lenses, it isn't a fair comparison. Use one of the harness type camera straps to help with the load or wear it from your hip, lifting it to your eye only to frame and shoot.
I think I am just going to have to figure a way to be able to carry my camera and lenses. I don't think I could get the same results with a bridge camera. Perhaps manother one ooir two prime lenses. My husband has offered to be the carrier and I think I will have to take him up on this.
Wearing it on the hip sounds like it could make a big difference. I am going to try that right away. That takes all the pressure off. Thanks
That could be an interesting camera as an extra, but I don't think it replaces the d600. I have had some fantastic shots. thank you all for your help. I guess one has to decide between quality and comfort.
Will look into those right away.TU
There are different styles and some are designed for women.
My wife really likes hers.
Which style does your wife use. They look very interesting and I believe they are long enough to rest on the hip.
