Watch out for 47th Street Photo!

I don't remember the exact conversation, but in one pretty long ago someone mentioned an Opteka 650 to 1300mm lens, and that it was difficult to use. Well, smart-aleck me thought "I've had 'difficult to use, before (cars, boats, cameras, women, guns) so I bet I can get some of those wonderful bird pictures with it." Guess what; the poster was right: it's too heavy and clumsy to use effectively and not all that sharp, either. I got a return authorization from 47th Street, packed it up in original wrappings and hauled off to the UPS Store. It cost $17 to send it off! (Remember, Amazon.com pays the shipping both ways -- and B&H should). Then I got my second shock: 47th charged me 40 bucks for the return! In the past they were indicted and (I think) the then-owner jailed for fraud.
STEER CLEAR of this store!!

I have purchased from 47th street several times and never had a problem. They do have a restocking fee, and it is in their terms. I just returned a flash and they did not charge me a restocking because I have purchased from them several times.

There are two different stores 42 street photo, and 47 street photo. 42 street photo(www.42photo.com) is the older store, specialized in photography. 47 street photo(www.47stphoto.com) is an appliance store that sells photography equipment.

I started buying from 47th St Photo in the 1970's, and it was strictly photography. Have they changed?

I don't remember the exact conversation, but in on... (show quote)

Amazon will pay return postage if they made a mistake or if the product is defective. If you don't like it, or you change your mind, then postage is on you.

Most places have a restocking fee but don't exercise it unless the item is returned looking like it was opened. In other words, it the item and it's packaging looked exactly as it did when new they usually don't charge the fee. It doesn't cost them anything to put it back on their shelf but if they have to RA is back to the Wholesaler or manufacturer it costs them money.
