We use to have one for a pet when I was young but they turn mean when they get older, thanks for looking.

Some years back, we heard a small trash can fall by our back door. Thinking it was one or two of the farm cats, I took a 3 foot (half-inch thick) wooden dowel rod out with me to set the can back up. You never know what could be rummaging thru the trash.
It turned out to be an adult raccoon that snarled, and I mean snarled, before snapping off the end of the dowel rod in one bite. Had I just reached down that could have been my finger(s)! It scared the heck out of me and the coon was gone in a flash. You are wise to give them space.
I've seen them climb on a dogs shoulder in the middle of a creek and try drowning the dog, had to throw a rock and knock the coon off.

I have personally seen that drowning strategy in play. Have not forgotten how terribly torn up the bluetick was, too.
I had a redbone and watched it pull a coon out of a groundhog hole with the coon biting onto the side of its mouth.
