What a creation.
I wonder how many keys are needed; just one, or a different key for each lock?
If I ever used something like this I'd have a hard time remembering where I put a particular item.

I would wager one key. They appear to be what we called "skeleton keys" when I was a kid. You could buy them at most hardware stores and they fit most old locks.
The desk is incredible. The design and then making it would probably take years.
Thanks, Larry
Just an amazing piece of engineering, it never fails to amaze me just how inventive humans are. Thanks for the post

Thank You for posting. I always wonder if with today's technical experts if a craftsman of this quality still exists. Would like to know history of that desk.

There are not many around. The story of this tool box is that it took ten years to build where the cabinet maker was satisfied. I used it as desktop wallpaper on my laptop for years. Incredible craftsmanship. This is not my picture!

Maybe we've all been looking in the wrong place for proof of extra-terrestrial life. Because it's hard to imagine this incredibly complex transforming desk coming from anywhere but Cybertron, the home planet of the Autobots and Decepticons.
Surprisingly, though, it does hail from earth. And was actually created as far back as the late 1700s by master furniture craftsmen Abraham and David Roentgen. The desk certainly looks ornate at first glance, but it's when its endless secret lockboxes and drawers start to be revealed that you'll be truly impressed by the craftsmanship behind it. And jump ahead to the two-minute mark for a ridiculously complex pop-out easel that could out-transform even Optimus Prime. [The Metropolitan Museum of Art via Make]

I can't keep up with the keys to my truck and my cell phone. The desk would take weeks to figure out.
In times gone by craftsmen would build very ornate and elaborate tool chests to show off their skills.

When an apprentice neared is time of finishing his learning, he was given a project to complete to show his mastery of his chosen craft. Thus became the masterpiece of the master craftsman.

Would you believe that it took one craftsman seven weeks to build this magnificent wonder?
