Hello Hogs,

I need everyone's input. I just found out I'm going to Augusta for The Masters. Once in a lifetime opportunity. I want to take my camera but will only be able to use it at the Wednesday practice round.

The task is to take what I need and nothing I don't. I have the following:
Canon 50D
17-40L mm
18-135 mm
70-300 mm
50 mm

I'll also probably take the Nikon CoolPix we have in the house just to have at night while we're out drinking (no sense tempting fate by taking my good stuff).

Any suggestions are welcome.

You might want to check with the Masters on use of your camera!!. I would not like it if a flash was going off when I was addressing the ball.

Slow down . . . cameras are forbidden on the course during Thursday - Sunday tournament play. They are allowed for practice rounds up to Wednesday. The PGA and their courses are very strict about this . . .

That is correct, PGA is very strict about ALL cameras!

17-40L for the garden shots
70-300 for golf shots, because you wont be that close (never close enough). Leave the others at home. Fill the camera bag with batteries and memory cards.

You will not be able to take anything that remotely looks like a "proline" camera on the grounds at Augusta National, even on a Wednesday. You most certainly won't be allowed to take all those long lens'. I hate to burst your bubble but you will be stopped at the gate. Even you smuggle them in and they see you with them and do not have any media credentials, Augusta National will escort you off the grounds and there is a good chance that you never be allowed to go back. I have a good friend who is a golf journalist and I was with her when when a friend of a friend was caught after they smuggled in some long lens and the person was kicked out. Augusta was quite polite about it (it's the south after all) but they were gone within minutes. This happened on a Tuesday practice round. The PGA Tour does not run 'The Masters', Augusta National runs the 'The Masters'! It's a special place, you won't believe your eyes when you see it. You just won't see it through your camera.

Augusta is very courteous regarding the Pros that play there. After Tiger won a couple of years ago, he came back Monday morning, knocked on the front door, and asked if he could play another round. The uniformed doorman said, well, not here, but there is another Club just a 5 iron down the road. Tiger replied, "But, I just won here yesterday!" To which the doorman said, helpfully, Well, in that case it is only a wedge for you.

Enjoy the experience, and by all means leave the camera home, dood!

The longest lens is my suggestion.
In the link below, there is note of limitations on the size of bags / packs you can bring in - batteries and memory cards in a small bag, camera and the long lens on the shoulder seems the best route, given the limitations imposed by the course and the PGA.

Ditto, if allowed which probably not. It was at the masters that a CBS broadcaster mentioned the prize money on the air. He has not been allowed back since then.
