I bought a canon 50mm 1.8, no hood came with it. Should I get a hood for it?
yep. good for protection as well.
I would. As said above good protection and helpful avoiding unwanted light striking the lens and possibly spoiling a otherwise great shot.
A hood also prevends rain from hitting the lens front. One caution.... Get the right hood too long a hood will cause vignettes

You bought was is probably the best value-for-dollar lens in the entire universe. Hope you enjoy it as much as I'm enjoying mine.
Which hood is best for the 50, 1.8?

Well, I bought promaster hood. It costs 18 dollars. The canon hood price is 40 dollars. Both look same. I rather buy promaster. Just hood!

I bought a Canon 50mm f/1.4 and it came with a Canon hood.
Maybe the f/1.8 does not.

That's correct. That's why it costs less than a hundred bucks.
On the subject of hoods, does anybody know where I could get completely circular hoods for my Nikon lenses? I had one on my Sigma 70-300mm years ago and preferred it to the butterfly hoods.
