Hi all,
getting ready for trip )Istanbul to Beijing) taking in all the "stans" except Afganistan and Pakistan for 4 months
Who has had experience with travel insurance for these areas?
Checked with my CC providor (underwritten by Allianz) and they have said that I am covered for items up to $5K per item max $15K per person or $30 K for couple, seem's too good to be true but they sent a PDS which seems to confirm this as long as I can produce the receipts for the items confirming how they were purchased ie Kit lens or seperate, 5DMKiii body with lens or just the body then the lenses purcahsed as a seperate item

Thus anything you've had for 5 years will be reimbursed 10% and anything for 2 years will get 64% reimbursement.

I'd ask the cost of a full replacement rider, at least on the first $10,000.

Yes, full replacement value. Rider is inexpensive, especially considering the lost opportunities if equipment is damaged, stolen, or vandalized.

In terms of full coverage insurance: equipment, luggage, medical, dental, trip interruption, etc., I would highly recommend Squaremouth.com I have used the site dozens of times to buy insurance for foreign travel. A great way to compare policies from various companies using your parameters.

Check you home owner's policy to see if such coverage can be added for full replacement value.

You will love Istanbul. Been there twice, and my son lives there now (an Iowan fluent in Turkish - you figure!) and writes for one of the major daily papers.

The main mosque has just completed a major renovation, and I plan on returning to photograph it in September. Access is easy as long as you are considerate, you remove your shoes before entering a mosque, and if in the company of a female be sure she covers her head with a scarf.

If Bursa, Turkey is not on your itinerary, it should be. More great mosques and parts of the ancient walled city (the original terminus of the Spice Road). Like all the few large cities, vistas are few and things are crowded together.

Have a GREAT TIME!

I have a rider on my homeowners policy covering all my camera equipment for full replacment value - $10,000 of coverage for under $300 per year. I wouldn't just insure while traveling, I like to have that insurance all the time. The company is Travelers Insurance Co.

I would NOT recommend a rider on your homeowner’s policy for a couple reasons. First you’ll be subject to the deductable should you have an issue. Second should you have a claim your homeowners policy can easily increase in premiums. I would suggest a segregated policy specific to your camera gear. These policies are not subject to deductibles and will not raise your homeowner’s premiums. They are very inexpensive and will also offer you replacement cost coverage.

I'll 'second the motion' on medical insurance, and add medical evacuation insurance, and some sort of policy to return your remains - should the ultimate accident occur.

Good luck & enjoy what sounds like a trip of a life time!!!

You, in my opinion, absolutely need the medical insurance. If that is all you take it is relativelyu inexpensive. While in Turkey my wife seriously hurt her back and we were flown home by private Lear Jet via, Hamburg, Keyvafleck ( spelling is undoubtedly not correct), Goose Bay, Toronto, and WY. We can highly recommend TripMate.
