Sigma 18-250 f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM ?

For a variety of reasons I tend to shoot at fairly long distances. With my Nikon D5100 I routinely use the 55-200 kit lens and swap out for the 18-55 kit lens when needed. I also use a 35mm 1:1.8 prime when opportunity presents itself. I'm pleased with all 3 lenses. My question is simple: Will the Sigma 18-250 f3-6.3 DC OS function as a replacement for the 2 kit lenses I lug around ? Realize you guys might need specifics as to typical lighting, camera settings and the like but I am merely talking about the lens(es) in general. Thanks

I would have to recommend the Nikon AFS DX 18-300mm if you are seriously looking for a DX replacement for your two kit lenses.

I have an older VR I version of the Nikon 18 to 200 and the Sigma 18 t0 250 lens. The Sigma was purchased when the Nikon was off for repairs and I neeeded something in a hurry. After using the Sigma for a while I went back to the Nikon lens. I felt the results were better. The other Nikon lens mentioned by MTShooter is a newer lens and I would seriously check it out before I purchased the Sigma lens. The Sigma lens seemed to give soft results and lack contrast compared to my older Nikon lens.

There is currently a sale on Nikon lenses that was extended, I think, until the end of March. There are varying discounts on different lenses and cameras. This may help your choice.

I know this nikon 18-300 is not a macro lens, but if you set it to 300mm, how close it can get, what is the working distance, my goal is for flower, usually they are about 1" to 2" diameter. Can I do a reasonable close up shot on it.
thanks.

The minimum focus distance is about 17" if I remember correctly. At 300mm that gives pretty nice flower shots, and much better DOF than macros.

What would that be in the Canon world?
