I want a sharp, fast 24mm (~35 mm equivalent) for D80. Mostly for landscapes, general photography, etc. I'm not likely ever to move up to FX format, but will likely move to a D7000 or its sucessor at some point. Suggestions--Nikkor or other. . . ?

I was looking for the same thing earlier this year to use with my D300, for mostly landscapes. The equivalent DX format lens to a 24mm would be a 16mm. My research brought me down to 3 lenses: The Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8, which is a pro lens and costs $2000.00 (too expensive for me). The Nikkor 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 ED VR that costs $700 list. And the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (the non VC, vibration control, version got better marks for sharpness) wide range of prices on line, but the low cost leader of the three. What I ended up choosing was the Nikkor 16-85 because of its very good reviews and low distortion at 16mm. It's not fast but I don't really need a fast lens for landscapes as they don't move very quickly. The Tamron got good reviews also but I decided to stay with Nikon for a number of reasons that I can go into if you like. That's my 2 cents worth.

Ken Rockwell was one of the reviews I looked at.

I do not own a Tamron lens, but I have heard and read good reports about them. Today, I learned that the President of Tamron was a lens design engineer for Nikon, before starting his own company. Tamron lenses list for approximately half the cost of an equivalent Nikkor lens.

Until you find a wide angle lens here is something to try, I do this a lot. Shoot 3 or 4 photos with the camera vertical and a 20 to 40 percent overlap and stitch them together as a panorama. This will give you the equivalent of a wide angle lens but with somewhat higher resolution (more pixels). I shoot this way with my 16mm lens as well as it produces less lens distortion in this manner. It won't work for action but it's great for landscapes. Try it if you have software that can join the images, it works great for me.

Nikkor 14-24/2.8 is one of the "holy trinity" along with the 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8; the 17-35 is supposed to be pretty good, as well. I have the 24/2.8 prime and use it on the D40 and N90.

Check out Thom Hogan (www.bythom.com). Rockwell is one source, but he admits a lot of his reviews are made up.

The Tokina 11-16 f2.8 is a fantastic lens. Sharp, Tough and Reasonably Priced...A real winner.

I also recently bought a Tokina 11-16 mm lens and it is a great super wide lens, especially for architectural shots and interiors. But because of its very limited zoom range, it is practically a prime lens, and I use it mostly at 11 mm.

If I were in the market for another lens, I would choose the Nikkor 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 ED VR because this provides the zoom range that I would have the most use for.

Sigma has a great 24mm f/1.8 EX DG ASP Macro Lens $580 probably less expensive on Amazon or BH Photo They also have a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM for about $1,400. Not sure what you are trying to shoot but both are good choices at the 24mm focal.
