Kookaburra is a member of the Kingfisher family, native to Australia and New Guinea. 11 to 17 iches with a call that sounds like laughter. There are 4 known species ..Rufous Bellied, Spangled , Blue Winged and Laughing Kookaburras. They will eat insects, snakes, lizards, mice, other small birds, raw meat, worms and frogs.
They will take raw or cooked meat from humans, and do steal from BarB Qs or plates.
Small prey is swallowed whole, larger prey is bashed on the ground or a branch to kill. They usually pair for life and nest in bare hollow trees. Previous 1 or 2 years younguns and both parents help with the feeding of new hatchlings.
WOW.....I love the detail! And #3 is just awesome. Great shots.
Cute, cute bird and great photos! Thanks also for accompanying information. Adds a lot to our enjoyment.

Nice series of photos! It must be fun having it hang around for a photo session. What is the species of this Kookaburra?
Hi Mjl This is a Blue Wing Kooka. He was hanging around
waiting for us to move away from the barBQ, he was eyeing off the sausages. Thanks Yvonne
Handsome bird. Nice capture.

What's really weird is that as I am sitting here writing there are half a dozen Kookaburras out the back of my place making a hell of a racket, but I do love them. These shots are very good. They are clean and crisp and as a set they really show off all the lovely details. My only quibble is that it is not a Blue Wing Kookaburra its a Laughing Kookaburra. Blue wings are from the North of Australia and only range down as far as Brisbane. They also have a white eye and they don't have the eye streak that the Laughing Kookaburras have. Doesn't change the fact that they are lovely pics. Love to see some more of your stuff.
Peter
Hi conkewood, Thankyou I sit corrected, the shots were taken in Northern NSW. A very obliging fellow. He did eventually get his sausage. Thanks for the update. Yvonne
Very nice series. I enjoy seeing images of birds from around the world. You take me places that I will not be abe to visit personally. #3 is my favorite. Thanks for sharing.
A beautiful set as always :-) Our equivalent is the Kingfisher which is probably our most spectacular bird. Unlike the Kookaburra ours is very small and elusive and capturing a good photograph requires careful planning and patience. I agree with Naturepics43 it is so great to see pictures from around the world. The additional information is a welcome bonus..tfp :-)

Peter: can you post a Blue Wing Kookaburra for comparison? Like many on here, this is how I "travel"-- as much as I'd like to visit-- it gets less likely every year....
Me too Peter, would love to see a blue wing, havent been to Queensland ., took the blue on our fellows wings to be the Blue wing..oops. I guess they all would sound similar ?
Thankyou again for setting me straight, never stop learning  Yvonne
