Hi Bob I already own the same flash and I want to get the same lens as you now have. My question is how much DOF can you get with this lens. I see you went with f/13 but what can it do at the smallest f/ #? Does the depth of field decrease with higher mag or does it stay the same? Do you think this lens is going to work out in the field or is it just for in studio? I am interested in a full review from you on your new setup. I know others use this setup on the UHH macro site and I think we can get help from them as well.
With no IS on this lens do you have problems with camera movement?
Are you going with 1/200 shutter speed because that is flash sink speed and have you tried slower speeds?

I came to the same conclusion. If I was starting out today, I would seriously consider going with Canon for this lens alone. For strictly macro use, the ability to go from 1:1 to 5:1 without adding tubes, etc would be the primary reason. However, it has very limited use--and it's spendy-- around $1100 as I recall. I guess, with my lenses, I'm "married" to Nikon.

(On the other hand: how many supermodels are great conversationalists?) ;-)

Hi Bob I already own the same flash and I want to ... (show quote)
DOF is VERY thin and the more you magnify the more you lose, I haven't had it long enough to answer your questions definitively , today I am walking around with it, just tried getting a jumping spider at 3X, it wasn't having it as the (WD)working distance is 2 inches went down to 1X which is 4 inches WD and chased it around. with flash you have the freeze affect so IS isn't an issue, without flash forget about it unless on tripod, gonna post some from last night on tripod (dead cricket) at 5X, more to follow definitely have my work cut out for me (have no doubt) thanks for looking

Thanks Tom - I hope I can at least match what your getting already with your setup, thanks for setting the goal post so high , looking at others work with it I couldn't NOT buy it, as I had the $ from my scrap brass/copper I turned in and B&H lowered price to $996 I pulled the trigger, and well now I am whirling from the challenge,

Thanks Douglass for the I.D., she who lives indoors was not amused when told about a pest in the house
