I just purchased a Canon EOS T3 and I would like to purchase a zoom lens but I have no idea where to start or what would be a the best lens to get which one would give me the most for the money, that's reasonably priced 200-300- dollars.
I just like to have fun taking pics I'm not a professional but sometimes I see something at a distance and if I take a pic of it it ends up looking like a dot in the distance ?

In that price range, you won't find a great lens; however, you will be able to buy something that will get you started. You will be able to learn about it's capability and then you can make a better decision later when you can afford a better lens. There are many who buy a $400 lens and then later find out that it is poor compared to the $3000 lens. The $400 lens then becomes available within your price range. It would be much better than a new lens at the same price level.
Many camera stores have a consignment area that allows their customers to place used equipment on display and sell them for a small fee. The next choice is E-Bay.
I have bought new lenses for thousands and used lenses for a few hundred and have been satisfied with the performance on the used lenses.

The right lens would depend on what you need/want, right now I'm dxrolling over a 17-70 zoom from sigma, a little longer zoom range and a bit faster than my canons, but I'm doing more short low light stuff lately, Bob.

Like others said, its all about application and wanted effect. And like most of us out there, cost vs. performance is always a consideration.
For myself, I try to get a lens that can cover the widest range of apps possible and still keep the cost down. Like maybe an 24 to 150 mm. That will open up to 1.8 for low light levels. I don't know if you can get something with these kinds of numbers for your camera. But it is more for reference.
Anyway, my 2 cents worth.

go used. I've almost always purchased lenses used - never had a problem - I use KEH but there are other equally good sources. I'd check into third party manufacturers as well. Tamron, Sigma, Vivitar, Tokina....

I have the canon 55-250, nice lens, not too heavy to walk around with, Bob.

Photomom, I tried sever lenses when I first purchased mu Canon 7D. My concern was $$$ as well as good function. I settled on the Tamaron 18-270; It has good reviews and I find it very good as a walk around do a lot lens. It wasn't the cheapest but was well worth the $$$.
