A good starting point will be 250 per day plus the cost of the photographs, that's 31.25 an hour for 8 hours of work

I would think a lot would depend on how close you are as friends and neighbors

She has beautiful things, very unique pieces from Germany, and a Southwestern style of beautiful artifacts

I am sure she would be more than happy to barter with you if you like.

Jewelry can be tricky to shoot, due to the reflections, and DOF requirements. I would be tempted to use a massive scrim type defuser between the main light and the object being photographed, or perhaps a light box, or shoot outside on an overcast day.

You need soft-diffuse light, and you need to get the white balance correct. (I would shoot a grey card, perhaps even as the background upon which the jewellery sits.)

This link seems to offer sound advice ... http://www.mkdigitaldirect.com/tips/jewelry_photography_tips.html#1

What to charge? Time and materials seems like a fair approach. Figure out what hourly rate you will be happy with, record all material costs, and charge on that basis.

I just completed my first product shoot. It was the most difficult challenge I have faced in photography. Light and shadows are critical. Also the consistency of the background with the most subtle change in light changing the colour of background. Good luck. ps Made $80.00 an hour for a 22 hour shoot.

I've done a lot of this type assignment to record the assets. I charge 100 per hour and provide the photos on cd. The purpose is just to identify the objects and home; not for use to try to sell them. It allows the heirs to see what was there.
