Are you shooting in matrix metering or center weighted? It makes a lot of difference based on your scene content. You might want to shoot these type of scene in matrix metering mode.

Thanks everyone for the help. I'm new to the D7000 (1 month)..still alot to learn about it, but learning quick. That's why they call me Coondog...I stick with something until I get it.
JR1..thanks so much for your advice. You opened up my eyes to the importance of proper metering...which I'll now study in depth.

Remember you have three good meters in your camera. The Matrix that measures severel points. (I use this the most). Center weighted that is a hold over from film SLRs that in my opinion is not as good as Matrix. And the spot meter wich is great when you want to expose for a spot. I like the spot so well that I programed my Func button so that if I press it my metering will go into spot. I shoot most of the time in A so if I think the camera meter is over or under for the for the conditions I am shooting under or want to over or under expose to my liking I set the EV to do that. - Dave

I bought 2 to add to the business, was checking out the 7ds as we shoot Canons, but the D7000s are better in every way than the 7Ds (in my opinion) and that is my opinion only.

My advice......

I use hand held meters especially for studio shots and still lifes, get a good working Weston Euromaster and take great pleasure from it.

In manual mode, my D7000 consistently underexposes by -7EV. Both the exposure meter in the view finder, and LED confirm correct expose when I take the shot, but it's underexposed when downloaded. While trying to figure this out, I shot in auto to compare. In auto...perfect exposure!
Any thoughts on this...or is it the camera (still under warranty). Thanks..

if you know your meter always under exposes by 2/3 stop then simply compensate.

Not really an answer is it, you need to know why and learn from that what to do not to be,

If the camera has -7ev dialed in, it's not going to affect Auto-mode, only manual and semi manual modes.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm familiar with DSLR meters and have never had this problem before. What baffles me is that it's constantly -7EV, and then perfect (in auto mode) for the same exact shot!
