Going to take a trip where the safety/care of my 5DM3 and lens will be questionable. Naturally I want to be able to take photos, I am looking for something that wont be too obvious, can be concealed easily and is pretty rugged yet take raw images. Could be either a fixed lens or zoom but with fast glass.
Prefer no flash and high ISO capability. Your experiences please. Like to keep budget under $1500.

Nikon just released a new camera, fixed focal length, fast lens, raw capable. I also think that Panasonic and Fuji have also just released new cameras that would meet your needs.

Check out the Sony RX 100. It's small, metal body, 20mp, shoots raw, very good images. About $650.

Canon G15 or other high end point and shoot, so long as it has a viewfinder, Bob.

you might check out some of the new mirrorless cameras...many are outstanding on all counts. Also try taking some black tape...anything from gaffer to electrical...and carefully cover the name of the camera, model number, etc. If you do it right your camera will look like a very plain-jane piece of junk....and that is exactly what you want...

Use Gaffer tape does not leave residual stickiness on the camera or lens

Olympus "mirrorless" E-PL5. Has the new Sony 16Mp sensor that helped Olympus win the coveted Camera of The Year award at DPreview for 2012.

Interchangeable, and a very large array of Micro 4/3 lenses counting combined lenses from Panasonic and Olympus. A budding number of fast primes. I suspect the usable, high quality lens count exceeds those available for any other mirrorless offering.

Adapted lenses for almost every legacy lens in the market including Leica screw, Contax and others.

Lens REACH... your lenses, whether native or legacy go twice as far on the 16MP 4/3 sensor. Birders are very happy with a 400 becoming and 800 on the 2X sensor, and still have the ability, range and ISO performance to play against the big boy pants crowd.

The sensor is only slightly smaller than APS-c and it is becoming a popular "concealed carry" camera for many professionals, plus you do NOT need a background check or permit.

Olympus. Either the PEN, or the weatherproof OM-D EM5.

Why not take your 5DMIII? Just make sure you have insurance. I used to covet my expensive equipment so that no harm would come to them, but it really defeats the purpose in my opinion. So my 2 cents is to take the 5D and use part of the $1500 for some good insurance.

I second the RX-100. It is the go to camera for me on a daily basis. Has all the functionality of an SLR except interchangeable lens. f/1.8 CZ lens. The high ISO noise is very low even at 3200. Images acceptable at 6400 with PP noise reduction.

What other point and shoot camera comes with a flash that you can bounce off the ceiling/wall? The RX-100 has built in HDR that works very well even hand held. A nighttime setting that can shoot 6 images and stitch them together in camera in very-low light you just won't believe until trying it.

The small size combined with all the features make this one of the best PS cameras you can get today.

EDIT: One thing I thought I would not like is the lack of a viewfinder. After getting used to using the 'live view' instead on the RX-100, I find myself using 'live view' on my SLR more and viewfinder less. It did take some getting used to, but now it is just 2nd nature.

ISO 1600, 1/125, f/4.5 she was severly back lit from a window. Resized to 2048 on long side for upload.

I guess I misunderstood the OP's question. He didn't come right out and say point-and-shoot, but after reading it again, perhaps you are right.

In this case, I would recommend the Canon S95, 100, or 110. Fits in your pocket and shoots RAW. Takes wonderful photos.

Canon G15 you know how the camera works because it has the same basic menu system you use now. Has a viewfinder, shoots raw and jpeg, 28-140 zoom f2 lens. small and easy to carry.

look up DP review.
