Can I achieve better dof? Shot with Canon 5D III with 100-mm macro at f/22 using ring flash. Any tips greatly appreciated

I would suggest NOT decreasing your aperture any further than f/22. In fact, f/16 will provide a sharper image.
To increase DoF, I often shoot farther back than MFD, then crop to macro or tighter.

Thank you for the tips. I will find another fly and try again. Perhaps flattening it with a rolled up newspaper would solve the dof issue!
