I shoot with a Canon 2ti and a 70-200mm Sigma lens. I rented a 85mm lens and couldn't get as good shots. Anyone have any suggestions how to use the 85mm?

How fast is the 85? I have been shooting with a canon 50mm shudder priorty at 1/225 to 1/320 and ISO on auto. The ISO is at 400 to 800 no noise. I use a canon 60d. Yes some shots the subject is a little small but good enough to enlarge wit PSE11. I would think a fast 85 would do a good job.

It was 85mm 1.8 and I was shooting in Av at 1.8. I felt more confident that I would get better shoots with the 70-200. I guess I was use to being able to zoom in and out with this lens. I had a difficult time adjusting.

The 85 is a little long much of the time. I use the 70-200 almost always but sometimes want or can get really close and switch out to a 24-70. Either are great choices depending on where you are sitting or standing and the biggest problem in most school gyms are the very shallow side and end areas available to stand or sit in and still be out of the way. Nearly everything about these gyms favor a fast zoom shooting from the stands.
Great action capture on your third photo.

I shoot a lot of middle and high school basketball. I find the 85mm 1.8 works great for near court action from the baseline between the corner and just outside the key. I'll sometimes use a 50mm 1.8 under the basket.

I am sure that the 85mm is a good lens...I personally couldn't get good shots with it...probably due to lack of experience. I would shot from the corner of the court on the floor. Maybe I will rent the lens again and try again. I was going to rent the 24-70 lens next.

If you are on the floor you will love the 24-70.
