Google's Picasa is an amazing tool for free, but does not match the power of Photoshop or it's free alternative GIMP. picasa.google.com

Photoshop and Picasa are two totally different programs. Photoshop is a professional level editing program made by Adobe and offers a free 30 fully functional trial, after which you have to buy it (for $999.00 USD).

Picasa is offered by Google and is free. I don't have any experience with it, I personally use Adobe Lightroom 4 and Elements 10, both of which I bought after the 30 day trials. Lightroom is a great organizer and very useful for minor tweaking of your photos (exposure, cropping, etc...) whereas Elements is more for manipulating your photos. Both programs are geared more towards the consumer / photo enthusiast market.

Really couldn't understand the question at first, the two programs are so different.

Got into Picasa 3 and played with it. It's a blast for playing with photos and can make some fairly sophisticated changes but..

Photoshop is the ultimate in photo manipulation. You can get a thirty day trial which will give you an idea of its power but, may scare you away. They have a subscription available for about $20.00 a month. They also have a lite version called Elements at $99.00 that is pretty awesome but not as precise.

I recommend getting a trial of Elements and seeing where that takes you.

I use free Picasa 3.9 for 95% of my post process tweaking (exposure, contrast, color saturation, sharpening, leveling, and cropping). I use PhotoShop Elements 10 for layering, cloning, and other major editing. http://picasa.google.com

By now, you should have realized that Adobe offers free trials for CS6 and Elements 11. If you can't use Gimp or Picasa, try the Adobe trials. Good Luck!

Please be aware that my recommendations of Photoshop, Elements, Gimp and Picasa are based on the fact (among others) that all can be used on both Windows AND Mac platforms.

I used to run Windows when I started digital photography and have seen Irfanview come from a simple editor to a highly adaptable program, used and respected by many.

SIDE NOTE: Irfan, where is our Mac version?

Actually, there is a way to run Windows programs on a Mac. You need to partition the HDD (or format an external drive) and install "Boot Camp","Parallels Daestop" or "Fusion" all of which will enable you to boot into a Windows emulator.
