I have no personal experience with an EM-140 DG Macro Flash unit. I use a US$30 O-Flash attachment on my standard Nikon SB-600 speedlight: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html#511426

Do you already own a speedlight?

Many fellow M-Ps use commercial softbox or DIY softbox attachments on standard speedlights. An articulated mount is also required. See a few designs, bottom of this page: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-3.html

Typical commercial softbox (approx 8x10-inch):

I broke my speedlight but have a jessops speedlight I've borrowed to which I've added a diffuser made from a peanut carton it's already lined with aluminium foil and on the front is some packing material .the one thing we don't have to uch of here in the uk sadly is bugs to try it on.

Replace the packing material with a good quality paper towel, it softens the light better. Also make sure your diffuser gets larger from the flash outwards, at least three times larger, if round then your diffuser acts as a snoot, just placing the light closer to the end of lens and not really softening the flash. I made several Snoots to start with, but got Much better results when I made my diffuser larger at the far end. You can see the one I made from the link cited by Nikonian72.

If you shoot Nikon, there's nothing wrong with the SB400. It's around $125 USD new-- and if used close with diffusion, it's enough. I control mine through the camera menu and routinely shoot @ Manual 1/16 power & 400 ISO and f/22. I've never had a recycle issue.

I had been using my Nissin Flash with a diffuser and shadow box, but recently added a Polaroid Macro Flash. It was a great addition and not much money, to me it was worth the price.

Would love to see some sample shots/macro at F/22 to see how it compares to a speedlight.

We all would like to see a few True Macro-Photographs illuminated with your Polaroid Macro Flash unit, preferably f/16 or f/22.
Please start a new thread, with text and macro images.

I have a Sigmaring flash (EN-140Dg) that I use and find it fine.
